Two Sentences On: Coppelia.
1. In 1974, George Balanchine revived the lighthearted classic Coppélia, weaving together themes of objectification, curiosity, and superficiality through the story of Swanilda, Franz, and a toymaker’s doll.
2. The New York City Ballet’s production, forever reliant, possibly to a fault, on Balanchine, balances storytelling, classical dance, and spectacle, with the rarely ever seen third act which, to this critic’s unexpected satisfaction, was not afraid to put spectacle over narrative complexity.
